Hooray! today’s ride was going to be held in glorious sunshine which we had been enjoying most of the week. Continuing the pattern of the previous two evening rides this year, seven riders turned up, meeting as per the norm, at the Victor Hugo (AKA Victor Meldrew) café on the Meadows. Waiting the cursory 10 minutes after muster time, we set off to the Leamington Lift Bridge, through Bruntsfield Links. Then down through Fountain Park bumps, onto RRZZ (Russell Road zigzags) onto the Roseburn and Blackhall corridor to Siverknowes (Silvery Cows in Strava parlance I believe). Instead of carrying on East Barnton Avenue toward the golf courses, we took a left past the entrance to The Royal High School and found ourselves in D’Mains Park. From there we exited the ‘Hole in the Wall’ to cross Queensferry Road and into Clermiston.

After zig-zagging in a generally upward direction, past St. Andrews Church, we joined the shared path running alongside Clermiston Road, which we crossed at Cairnmuir Road before negotiating same to reach the woods at Corstorphine Hill. A couple of hundred yards of packed mud path and a flight of a dozen or so steps brought us to our sweetie stop at the Rest and be Thankful Viewpoint, where one can enjoy panoramic views over Edinburgh and beyond (See photos). As this feature was much earlier in the ride than last year’s visit – visibility was perfect for the vista - and also for the descent. The decent this time, however, was back to Cairnmuir Road and on to Clerwood Park, Caroline Terrace, across the busy Drum Brae South, down Craigmount View and onto the almost disguised entrance to the cyclepath network in East Craigs. From there we emerged at Craigmount High school, descended a few more steps to Dechmont Road, over Glasgow Road which we underpassed at the relatively new Edinburgh Gateway train station.

On to Turnhouse Road where we headed out towards the old airport terminal, taking a right at Turnhouse Farm Road. When we reached Lennymuir we had a decision to make, up and over the hill or along the rough riverbank trail? No strong objections to the river bank so off we went. Although much more overgrown than the Easy Cycle a week or two previously the path was still very discernible. Later in the season the path can become very overgrown with nasty nettles and horrible Giant HogweedThe bikes and riders handled this section well and there were no reports of spills or broken bikes. (This section has been dubbed the ''Easy Cycle Boot Camp'. Thanks whoever coined that one!). We exited the riverside path at Cammo Road near Cammo Farm and re-crossed Queensferry Road into Barnton, where we travelled up Braehead Road, onto Barnton Grove, Barnton Park Crescent, a short stint through the woods adjacent to Queensferry Road, D’Mains Park, through Tesco’s car park and back on to NCN1 to return to the Leamington via RRZZ and the bumps. Not noticing (ahem) the no entry signs at Leamington Road we made our way through and up Leamington Terrace to our quarry – a brisk beer at Bisque, where four of us enjoyed a post ride blether. Hopefully an enjoyable ride in definitely enjoyable weather. Long may it Continue.

Time constraints meant we didn't do the Drylaw section on the night, and I didn't do the riverbank section on the reccie.
